The Analytical Sciences Unit (ASU)

The Analytical Sciences Unit (ASU) provides the Institute of Food Research with state-of-the-art instrumentation across several platform technologies, including infrared (IR), low- and high-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and a range of hyphenated techniques (LC-MS, GC-MS).

Lead Scientist: Kate Kemsley

We offer associated expertise in chemical imaging, metabolomics, electron microscopy, statistics and chemometrics.

Working with colleagues from IFR’s strategic research programmes, we contribute to a diverse range of research projects from across the institute’s science portfolio.

Our own research activities focus on the development of novel approaches for characterising foods and ingredients using chemical profiling techniques, tackling issues such as authentication and compositional analysis.
